Tasco Varmint
Tasco Varmint
Is this a good gun set-up or not?
Savage 111 FXPC3
Tasco Varmint 6-24X42 with Mil Dot
rock mount bi-pod
youth stock
All for $463. Post what I should add or change. Or tell if it is good or bad. any pointers.
If this helps I'm hunting everything from mule deer to elk.
Some stuff is cheap because I don't really have a lot of $$$ I used almost all of my savings on this gun.
P.S I'm only 12 so is this a good starter gun.
The caliber is a .270 Winchester
To Luckyno7,
I was thinking about the 30-06 but I brobaly can't handle the reciol. What I mean is when I shoot my dad's the scope is off the target. So I decided to get the heaviest round I could handle.
One of you said to get a different scope choice. Any ideas what scope I should get under $150. But I need somthing like a 3-24x42mm scope.Far ranges.
Oh, I forgot
Limbsaver reciol pad
Weaver medium ceterfire scope rings
Sling
I didn't buy the scope or the rings yet. I am getting them next weekend.
The 270 is a very good cartridge and will serve you well for elk as long as you use a quality BONDED or controlled expansion bullet. Something like 140 or 150 grain Nosler Accu-Bond or Partitions, Bonded Bear Claws, Federal Premiums, etc. or Barnes Triple Shocks. Effective hunting range on deer and elk is 400 yards so having anything over a 10 power scope isn't going to help you unless you are going for gophers at 500 yards. An economical scope like the Tasco 3.5x10 50mm World Class would do you better service, and I've had one on my Browning A-Bolt since 1992 with ZERO problems. I actually prefer the Leupold scope mounts and rings over the Weavers, but if you already have the Weavers go ahead and use them. If what you have found is a package deal then even that is good pricing and you have nothing to change out till you need to get the full size stock. I've looked for the youth stock on a 270-30-06 platform and haven't found one, so sounds like you got lucky in that regard. I let my 11 year old shoot my 30-06, but he has a 243 Win currently.
They do make reduced recoil rounds for the 270, which might be an option. I bought my first 30-06 when I was 14 and never had any recoil issues. As for the Mil-Dot set-up on the scope, just use the crosshairs and don't worry about learning the drops with the dot system--better to know where your weapon actually shoots, not where you think the mil-dot will place it. More things on the scope, more things to get messed up.
Complete your Hunter Ed courses, and learn animal physiology from books like "The Perfect Shot", there is one for N. American and African animals that a library might have. Biggest thing about hunting is knowing when to NOT take a shot because you want to be humane and ethical in your hunting.
